If you’ve ever stared at a wholesaler’s glove catalogue and wondered why the same hand fits into a box of latex one day, a box of nitrile the next, and a box of “diamond grip” the day after — you’re not alone. Disposable gloves are one of the most repeat-ordered PPE lines in Irish business, and one of the most commonly bought wrong.

The four categories you’ll see most often in Ireland are powder-free vinyl, nitrile, latex, and diamond grip nitrile. They look similar in the box. They’re priced within a few euros of each other. But the right one for a creche worker, an HGV mechanic, a Garda on scene, and a pharma operator are four completely different gloves.

Here’s the plain-English breakdown, what each one is, what it’s good for, and where it falls down.

Powder-Free Vinyl — The Light-Duty Workhorse

What it is: A synthetic glove made from PVC. No latex, no powder, no protein allergens. Loose-fitting and the cheapest of the four by a margin.

Strengths: Genuinely cheap at scale. Comfortable for short tasks. Latex-free, so no allergy concerns. Powder-free means no contamination of food, surfaces, or paperwork.

Weaknesses: Lower puncture and tear resistance than nitrile or latex. Limited chemical resistance. Not suitable for prolonged contact with oils, solvents, or biological hazards.

Where it fits:

  • Food prep, deli counters, sandwich bars, short-cycle tasks where gloves are changed frequently anyway
  • General cleaning, bin handling, light janitorial
  • Reception and front-of-house first aid kits
  • Creches and after-school clubs, nappy changes, art and craft, low-risk hygiene tasks

If the task is light, short, and indoors, vinyl is usually enough. If anyone’s bleeding, soldering, or handling chemicals, step up to nitrile.

Powder-Free Latex — The Classic, With a Catch

What it is: Natural rubber latex. Strong, stretchy, with the best tactile feel of any disposable glove. Powder-free versions remove the cornstarch dusting that used to make latex easier to don.

Strengths: Excellent fit and dexterity — feels like a second skin. Good elasticity and tear resistance. Strong barrier against water-based contaminants and most biological hazards.

Weaknesses: Latex allergies are real and common — affecting an estimated 1–6% of the general population and higher among regular wearers. Once a workplace has a reported reaction, the whole site usually has to switch off latex permanently. Latex also degrades when exposed to oils, fuels and solvents.

Where it fits:

  • Hairdressing and salons — colour application, where dexterity matters and chemical exposure is short
  • Dental and clinical — where allergy screening is in place
  • Cleaning and janitorial — where grip on wet surfaces is needed
  • Tattoo and beauty — where tactile feel is critical

For most Irish workplaces, nitrile has replaced latex as the default simply because it sidesteps the allergy issue. But where dexterity and feel are non-negotiable, latex still wins.

Powder-Free Nitrile — The Modern Default

What it is: Synthetic rubber (acrylonitrile-butadiene). Latex-free, powder-free, available in blue, black, and a dozen other colours. The workhorse glove for most professional Irish workplaces today.

Strengths: Significantly higher puncture and tear resistance than vinyl or latex. Resistant to oils, fuels, and many solvents. No latex protein allergens. Comfortable for extended wear once correctly sized.

Weaknesses: Slightly less tactile than latex (though modern thin-mil nitriles have closed that gap). Higher unit cost than vinyl.

Where it fits:

  • Pharmaceutical and life sciences — cleanroom-graded nitriles are the standard across Munster’s pharma campuses
  • Healthcare, GP surgeries, nursing homes — Ireland’s clinical default
  • Tattoo studios and beauty therapists — black nitrile is the industry standard
  • Forensics, scene-of-crime, security — black nitrile gives a clean professional appearance
  • Mechanics, light engineering, parts handling — oil resistance matters here
  • Veterinary and animal care

If you’re not sure which glove your operation needs, the answer is almost always nitrile. It’s the safest default across the broadest range of tasks.

Diamond Grip Nitrile — The Heavy-Duty Disposable

What it is: A thicker nitrile glove (typically 8 mil and up versus 4–5 mil for standard nitrile), with a textured diamond pattern embossed across the palm and fingers. Built for mechanical work that would shred a standard disposable.

Strengths: Far greater puncture and abrasion resistance than standard nitrile. The diamond texture grips wet, oily, and greasy surfaces — exactly the conditions where a standard glove slips. Bright orange or black versions are highly visible for safety and brand consistency.

Weaknesses: Heavier and less tactile than thin nitrile — not the right glove for fine work. Higher cost per piece, but you’ll go through far fewer of them per task.

Where it fits:

  • HGV and commercial vehicle mechanics — oil, grease, sharp components
  • Plant hire, agri contractors, fleet maintenance — heavy mechanical handling
  • Engineering, fabrication, light welding prep — where grease and metal swarf are a constant
  • Industrial cleaning and decommissioning — chemicals, residues, sharp edges
  • Refuse and waste handling — puncture risk from unknown contents
  • Marine and dockside work — wet conditions, slippery loads

A standard nitrile won’t last ten minutes in a heavy mechanical environment. A diamond grip will see you through the job, and the grip on a wet socket wrench is the difference between finishing the repair and dropping the tool.

A Note on Powder (and Why Powder-Free Is Standard Now)

You’ll occasionally still see “powdered” disposable gloves. The powder (usually cornstarch) was originally added to make gloves easier to don. The downside is contamination — powder gets on food, on surgical surfaces, on paperwork, on machined parts. In healthcare, powdered surgical gloves are essentially obsolete. In food and pharma, they were never appropriate.

Powder-free is now the professional standard across almost every industry. If a supplier is still pushing powdered gloves, ask why.
